International exchange meeting between teachers, experts and friends of Tai Chi Chuan and Qi Gong from Europe, the Balkan area and beyond that develops friendship and expertise in these ancient Chinese internal martial and movement arts.
Exploring Tai Chi through philosophy follows an approach to the work of the great philosopher Democritus of Abdera, as a stimulus to the exploration of ideas from East and West.

The program
The program starts on Friday morning with courses in Taiji, Qigong and Tui Shou until Sunday evening. Friday evening is time for the philosophical and scientific lectures "Let's talk about Philosophy and Science" with experts and lecturers from the festival. On Saturday there will be Push Hands games, partner work and fix-step applications. Official language is English and German.
Sunday is the highlight of the festival: cultural program and a Tai Chi Gala with demonstrations by all participating teachers and at the end a Greek-style celebration – of course, good food and dancing cannot be missing.
The history of the Festival
Xanthi, located in northern Greece, also known as the capital of Thrace, is a beautiful, historic and culturally rich city built on the foothills of the Rodopi Mountains.
The first International Tai Chi Chuan Festival 'Demokrit from Avdira' was held there in May 2017.A three-day intensive program of tai chi and qigong classes, tui shou, philosophical and scientific lectures related to tai chi was organized by the Tai Chi Chuan Center in Xanthi under the direction and coordination of Emi Chatzipanagioti, certified Tai Chi Chuan instructor & coach, international TCC judge and member of the World Tai Chi Chuan Federation Taiwan.
The concept
For 7 years, the festival has supported the exchange of experience and knowledge in the art of Tai Chi and Qi gong. The International Tai Chi Chuan Festival is a gathering of participants and Tai Chi teachers from Europe, Greece and the Balkans. Cross-style Taiji courses and interdisciplinary approaches guide the program of the festival.
At the same time, the friendship between practitioners and teachers is cultivated and promoted. A network is formed between experts in Tai Chi, Qi Gong and philosophy but also in scientific research to support mutual understanding between the West and the East. Inspired by the great philosopher Democritus from Abdera, it stimulates the exploration and understanding of East and West in matters of ethics and global promotion in culture.
The place
The festival takes place on the outdoor and indoor facilities of the Agriani Hotel, just 4 km outside the town of Xanthi in the middle of the mountainous area and right by the river. The overnight stay for the participants is right there in the hotel.
